Where will your car get scratched?
Where scratches come from
Over the past 11 years, we’ve seen hundreds of cars come into our body shop with dents, scratches and some really nasty bumps. The causes of the damage can be as varied as the damage itself. Children riding bicycles will sometimes make a scratch as they play, people will key your car, and pretending to be a TV cop, sliding over the bonnet will likely leave a mark or two. In short, it’s not always pleasant but it does just happen, and who knows who you’ll meet whilst exchanging insurance details. But let’s hope they’re nice…
We see that most scuffs and scrapes happen in supermarket and shopping centre car parks. Sometimes a shopping trip can mean more than picking up a trolley full of provisions – often a heap of scratches to that pristine car. We see this increasingly. It doesn’t help that most people are in a hurry and focused on getting in and out quickly. This, coupled with seemingly ever shrinking size of allotted parking spaces, leaves us with a problem when it comes to parking. And sometimes, go on admit it, we park in a space that was designed for a trolley, not a saloon…
You, of course, only park in appropriate spaces. But this leaves you at the mercy of other parkers. Chances are they have shoe horned themselves into that post stamp sized space and are hell bent on getting back to their car before the engine has gone cold. They open their doors without thinking and – dink – a dent left in the smooth lacquer finish of your car body work. No matter, surely that little mark will rub off or polish out? After all, it’s so small it won’t be noticed.
Once out the car, people race to the shop entrance, trolley wheels spinning. Swerving between cars, bags, zips, buttons and belts catch the side of your car, causing a dent here, a scratch there, a chip in the paint work of your hatchback. Surely, no one will notice…
The shopping’s over, but the race continues with a trolley full of goodies and tasty treats. As they leave, items fall off the top of the load and they steer their trolley into another car. Not a huge problem, the mark is so small, and the car’s black so… They load their car and attempt to vacate the two-inch parking space…what was that? Oops, they’ve glanced the side of the car on the right…still it’s just a crease and again the black will make it hardly noticeable, it could have been there for ages…
As you can see, there’s a plethora of ways in which your car can become blemished, and that’s just going for your weekly food shop! So there are a huge number of opportunities for the irresponsible to make your car look like it’s in need of some attention.
So next time you go to the shops, keep an eye out for inconsiderate parkers – if you see them, we suggest parking on the other side of the lot. If you’ve picked up more than a basket full of shopping and found damage to your car, upload a photo for one of our Easy Estimates.
