First look at the Mazda MX-5 Mk1

At the end of 2017 this Mazda MX-5 Mk1 caught the eye of aspiring racing driver Matt Pollard. He travelled to Newton le Willows on Merseyside with his Dad, to look at the ex-Championship winning car that was for sale. The car had a few dents but seemed to be in overall good condition and Matt’s support team at AB Motorsport were on hand to check the car over before the negotiations took place.

In January of this year, Matt passed his Association of Racing Drivers Schools (ARDS) test with MSV at a Brands Hatch track day. He suited up with all the necessary racing gear and took the Mazda MX-5 Mk1 to Rockingham Motor Speedway in February followed by a track day at Snetterton in early March.

The BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship started on Saturday 24th March and so began his competitive racing for the 2018 season.

In the first weekend Matt managed to finished 7th and then 4th as he got to grips with the Mazda MX-5 Mk1 and the iconic track at Brands Hatch. The final race at Brands Hatch wasn’t so successful (after a detour into the gravel) and he finished the third race in a final position of 22nd. We started the necessary repairs and the groundwork for a brand new look for this Mazda MX-5.
