Podium finish for Matt at Cadwell Park
Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire
The circuit at Cadwell Park is one of the most technical and challenging in the UK. This wasn’t helped by the misty conditions (below) that the drivers faced on the testing day ahead of the racing weekend. After waiting for over an hour for the track to open, Matt got straight out and recorded some encouraging lap times, which was a preview as to how his weekend was going to turn out in the end.
Qualifying at Cadwell Park
Saturday morning was the qualifying and Matt was confident. He had got to know the circuit at Cadwell Park, but had concerns about how narrow it was. His goal for the session was to finish with a time that would start him in the first A race. By thinking tactically and allowing himself some space to get a competitive time (instead of trying to pass slower cars on a narrow stretch of track) he qualified 21st and secured a grid place for the A race.
The racing…
Thankfully the misty weather of the day before was gone and the predicted rain didn’t make an appearance so Matt was feeling positive. He had a rocky start as he couldn’t actually see the starting lights (!) but soon caught up with the pack and passed Paul Tucker on Park Straight. Initially the gap was just over a second but he soon caught up and the two cars were side by side in the braking zone. Unfortunately this didn’t end well with Matt’s brakes locking up and an adventure into the grass for both of them. The incident was reported by the stewards so after apologising to Paul, Matt was called to the clerk. Paul was understanding despite his frustration and knew that the bump happened due to Matt’s inexperience. No further action was taken, they shook hands and moved on.
The second race at Cadwell Park went a bit better for Matt. We’re thrilled to report that he finished in second place. Here he is looking pretty pleased with himself on the podium. Speaking before race 2B Matt hinted at his goals to be on podium when talking to Lyndsay from BRSCC. See the video via their Facebook page and look out for our Matt at 01:00 minute in!
