Covid-19 cancels four race weekends!
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic in the UK, four race weekends of the Mazda MX-5 Championship were cancelled by the BRSCC. Having set up virtual racing in the comfort of his own home, Matt was trying his best to make do with digital motorsport over months of lockdown. Anglesey, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Croft were all cancelled. The season started finally on the first weekend of August and it was a great start for Matt at his favourite circuit – Cadwell Park.
2020 would be a shorter season in fewer locations for the Mazda MX-5. The timetable for the weekend of 1st and 2nd of August was tight. The new format for race weekends allowing for only 15 minutes qualifying and two 15 minute races.
Let the race weekends begin
At Cadwell Park, it was a bright sunny day for qualifying. The first time in the car went well for Matt. He had a good position after an early fast lap and overall a fourth fastest time meant he started in a decent position on the grid for Race 1. Unfortunately, Matt lost a few places after not starting well off the grid. He was disappointed because he knows Cadwell Park is a tight track with very few places to overtake.
Unable to pass his opponents on the narrow track, Matt wasn’t able to make up the lost places. He finished the first race in 9th position.
The second race of the 2020 season
Starting on row three of the grid for the second race, Matt held his position well throughout. Once again he found the lack of overtaking opportunities to be frustrating in the second race. Track time was also reduced due to a major incident.
In the major incident the red flag was waved, lots of waiting followed and a grid restart was necessary. Thankfully the driver was uninjured. The car left the track at Barn, travelling over the barrier onto the slope on the other side. Overall it was a reasonable start to the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship with a finish in 6th place. Matt had some good lap times on a par with the race winners. However, there is work to do on his grid starts. If he can convert his qualifying performance into race positions he’ll be onto something. You can see Matt racing in the video below including the red flag at 12:21 and the subsequent restart!
